It’s Your Choice is thrilled to have gained the support of comedian, writer and actress, Jo Brand.
Known for her work with charities, particularly in the mental health sector, Jo Brand was only too happy to lend her support to the work of It’s Your Choice on a variety of issues facing young people.
Speaking about the charity, Ms Brand said;
“It’s Your Choice is a fantastic charity, which each year supports around 3500 young people aged 12-25, living in and around the New Forest area. Now in its 30th year, It’s Your Choice helps young people with a range of issues including homelessness and mental health. Never has the work of such charities been more important and I am delighted to be associated with this one.”
In what has been a difficult few years for the charity, having had their statutory funding reduced by 80% due to the much publicised budget cuts, It’s Your Choice welcomes support from any source. The biggest challenge of 2016, continuing into 2017, has been to raise £250,000 in order to purchase the Totton building they operate from and secure the future of the charity.
Talking about the gap that IYC fills for young people unable to access statutory services, CEO Chris Carey says;
“When faced with mental health problems many young people retreat into themselves and cannot access the counselling and support they so desperately need. Many do not meet the increasingly tight criteria to qualify for health or social services. Being a charity, It’s Your Choice can provide a safe and secure setting for patient and responsive listening, with practical advice, to all young people in the New Forest.”
The winter months are a particularly critical, and often bleak, time of year for some of the young people IYC works with, above all for those who are homeless. Being able to provide somewhere for these young people to have a hot meal, wash their clothes, and have a lifeline to a community they often feel pushed out of is a key part of the charity’s work.
It’s Your Choice would appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to support any aspect of the charity’s work in the New Forest area.
