Facts About Alcohol

1 in 3 reported rapes happen when the victim has been drinking. Getting drunk can leave you vulnerable.

Alcohol is involved in 15% of road deaths, 26% of drownings and 39% of deaths in fires.

Alcohol affects the brain within 10 minutes, so even one drink can affect your judgement.

Takes you liver 1 hour to process 1 unit of alcohol (see “Units” to find out more) so cold showers and black coffee won’t sober you up any quicker.

Long term drinking may result in brain damage, serious mental disorders and addictions to alcohol.

Too much alcohol can sometimes lead to impotence (not being able to get it up!!) Alcohol can also lead to infertility (not being able to have children)

Units

What is a unit?

A unit is a way of measuring how much alcohol is in a drink.

As a rough guide 1 unit = half a pint of standard strength beer, lager or cider (3.5 or 4% abv – Alcohol by volume)

~ A small glass (125ml) of lower strength wine (8 or 9% abv)

~ A single 25ml pub measure of spirits (40% abv)

But many drinks contain approximately 2 units of alcohol.

~ 1 pint or a large can (500ml) of standard strength beer, lager or cider (3.5 or 4% abv)

~ Half a pint or half a large can of high strength beer, lager (8 or 9% abv)

~ 1 large (50ml) Whiskey or spirit

~ 1 large glass (175ml) of wine that is 11 or 12% abv

~ 1 bottle of lager or “alcopop” (5.5% abv)

Daily guide – This daily guide is to show you how much you can drink without putting your health at risk.

However, they do not apply to women who are pregnant or young people who aren’t fully grown.

MEN = 3-4 UNITS OR LESS PER DAY

WOMEN = 2-3 UNITS OR LESS PER DAY

It is not okay to save up your daily unit allowance and use them in one go at the weekend!!
