]]>Southampton’s sensational artist Charley Stride is holding a concert in aid of It’s Your Choice
Monday 26th November 2018, 7pm
At The Vestry, 61 Commercial Road, Southampton, SO15 1GG
Having forged an envious career for someone so young, Charley won Live and Unsigned (2009), self-financed her debut EP, supported acts such as Anastacia, Will Young, Omar, DJ Fresh and Ruby Turner to name but a few and one of her own personal highlights was performing at Mama Stones, Exeter in front of a packed crowd which included her idol Joss Stone.
Charley’s hard work and determination culminated in signing her first record contract in April 2013 with Acid Jazz Records. Her mature and soulful voice was spotted by Radio 6 DJ and founder of Acid Jazz Eddie Piller, who is responsible for launching the career of Jamiroquai, so much so that the label snapped up her signature. Charley released her debut album “All I Know” through the record label, before turning her attention to writing new music with a new sound, stepping away from the label and working with writers who have worked with Naughty Boy, The Saturday’s, Rihanna, Chase & Status, Sigma, Cheryl and more.
Last Summer Charley performed in front of a 10,000-strong crowd whilst supporting Sir Tom Jones at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, impressing him so much that he demanded to meet her before he took to the stage. She has also wowed the crowds performing at some of Britain’s most prestigious festivals; Isle of Wight Festival, Bestival, Glastonbury, Camp Bestival and Blissfields as well as touring nationally from London to Glasgow.
Tickets are £10 from www.skiddle.com

]]>An evening with Peter Forbes – Share his adventure!
Friday, 12th October 2018 at Beaulieu Village Hall
DOORS OPEN at 6.30pm FOR 7.15pm
At the age of 8, Peter Forbes was taught to sail by his mother in a felucca at the confluence of the Blue and the White Nile in Khartoum – this engendered a lifelong love for sailing and for the sea. This early happy experience led to the nurturing of a dream over the intervening years to sail around the world. A meeting with Italian beer baron, Rudi Peroni, led to the acquisition of Carango, his beautiful 54ft yacht and to their training in its management. By 2016 Peter and Vicky, his wife, were ready to set sail and to fulfill this dream by embarking upon their epic journey. Paying specific attention to the Panama Canal, the Galapagos and Cape Town, the talk will cover the interesting experiences and exciting challenges that they faced during this long voyage.
TICKETS £15 in aid of Its Your Choice, a charity based in Totton who provide advice, guidance and counselling for 12-25 year olds throughout the New Forest. To book please contact Davina Downes, Rans Wood Lodge, Furzey Lane, Beaulieu, SO42 7WB ([email protected]) and send a cheque to her made payable to “Its Your Choice”.

]]>Aaron Low was feeling suicidal for a lot of last year. He tried to get help and eventually ended up at A&E numerous times after overdosing. He’s also #homeless and has been sleeping out in freezing conditions. pic.twitter.com/OVBtuQF0F6

Kat, his caseworker supports Aaron to get the help he needs. It’s “almost Dickensian” that homelessness is so prevalent in the 21st century, she says.
Katherine Herbert @ItsYourChoiceNF is his support worker. She says the physical conditions she sees in the homeless are “Dickensian” and that people are trapped in a cycle – “#mentalhealth, #homelessness, mental health, homelessness”. pic.twitter.com/xquiO04bSN

]]>This is particularly special because not only has Matt volunteered a lot of his time to our charity, but he and his lovely wife Amber decided to not to ask for wedding gifts when they got married at Trinity Church Totton on 29th July this year, but instead donations to their favourite charities. Here he is presenting the cheque to our youth Services Manager, Jan McCarthy.
It’s the kindness and generosity of people like Matt and Amber which really makes a big difference to us and enables us to continue delivering services which are so desperately needed by vulnerable young people across the New Forest.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Matt & Amber, from all at It’s Your Choice.
If you’d like to support our charity, you can do so by donating here.

]]>As part of the Community Matters initiative by Waitrose, shoppers are given a token at checkout and are invited to place it in one of three boxes, each representing a local good cause.
Earlier this week, Chris and Hannah were presented with a cheque for £240! We’d like to say a huge thank you to Waitrose for their continued support, and to their shoppers for choosing to support IYC.

]]>The pupils were asked for their feedback on the workshop and we’re pretty pleased with the results!
We think it’s really important to open a dialogue about emotional health and well-being with young people, and we’re pleased to see that the vast majority of these year 8 pupils found some real value in the workshop.
Of the pupils who completed the survey…
100% reported that they learnt something new from this workshop
96% found the workshop interesting and relevant
98% felt it was important to know about emotional health
95% would recommend the workshop to others
93% reported they left the workshop feeling confident enough to seek support from IYC, should they need it in the future.
Students were also asked what they took away from the workshop. Their comments include:
“Speak to someone if you need help”
“Treat your emotional health as well as your physical health”
“Respect others and give people space when they need it”
“Different ways to handle anger and emotion”
“There is always somewhere to go if you need help”

]]>The group of 11-15 year olds headed out yesterday at 5pm, ready to embark on an outdoor activity 4-day residential trip to Tile Barn Outdoor Centre, in Brockenhurst. Last night, the young people plunged head-first into their first challenge of pitching their tents (in rather unfavourable conditions!), and prepared for 4 exhilarating days, where they will work together as a team to complete a range of outdoor activities.
This is the first of 5 residential trips, in partnership with Youth Options, with the next one scheduled for 29th August. Watch this space for updates of how our young people got on…

]]>Despite the questionable weather, we were overwhelmed with the number of guests who turned up to show their support of IYC and celebrated our 30th year with us.
We’d like to extend special thanks to Mrs Mary Montagu-Scott, High Sheriff of Hampshire and Councillor Mrs Christine Ward, Chairman of New Forest District Council, who both said a few words about It’s Your Choice and why they believe it’s important to support our work.
Councillor Mrs Christine Ward selected It’s Your Choice as one of her chosen charities to support during her year in office and will be undertaking a range of activities (including abseiling down Spinnaker Tower!) in order to raise funds and awareness on our behalf.
We’d also like to thank Wendy Southwell for making and donating a glorious 30th anniversary celebration cake and Trinity Methodist/United Reformed Church for loaning crockery to us for the day.
We considered the day to be a huge success and very much look forward to what the future holds for IYC.
Here are some pictures from the day:
IYC’s CEO Chris Carey and Cllr Christine Ward cut the cake!

The garden party got off to a rainy start, but that didn’t deter our guests!

]]>Last year, It’s Your Choice was selected as one of the local charities to receive funding from the Co-op Local Community Fund.
Every time Co-op members buy Co-op branded products, 1% of their spend goes to a local cause, like ours. The money from this fund will make a huge difference to the work we do with vulnerable young people in the community.
Not only will this money support the general running of our charity, but it will also go towards the running of a Domestic Violence Awareness Project for young people in the local area.
We are so grateful to Co-op and its members for their support and kindness.
