Back on Track is a brand new two year training + wraparound support programme to help mostly 18-21 year olds (a few are older) from across the New Forest.
Supported by:
The young people who are taking part in Back on Track are known to IYC; we’ve known many of them for several years and have multiple and complex needs (97% are homeless/recently homeless; 84% have committed offences; 70% are drug users; 60% have mental health issues); most lead chaotic lifestyles. Few have qualifications due to disrupted schooling/further education – 95% are NEET.
We know from working with these young people on a daily basis that they have found previous education and training settings too formulaic, and with no other programme available in the New Forest, It’s Your Choice decided it was time to start our own.
The programme offers targeted skills training and wraparound support over 12 weeks (with three months’ follow up support) for 72 individuals over two years. Back on Track is flexible, tailored, and delivered in small groups and one-to-one sessions.
Participants will be working towards accredited awards and certificates (ASDAN Leadership Short Course), whilst we address the fear of failure within the group by providing all-round stability by proactive casework support. On course days we offer a nutritious breakfast and lunch, and alternative therapies such as Indian head massage during the breaks to help move away from the previous negative associations with education and training.
During the course the young people will complete a series of projects, such as cooking a three course meal as a group or planning and carrying out the redecoration of a room at IYC, to learn new skills and develop their leadership abilities.
As well as aiming to move these young people towards being work ready, we also place a strong focus on personal and social development. We know that these young people are worth something and we want to help them all to reach their full potential.
